The importance of Accessibility in the world of Design

When it comes to creativity, it knows no boundaries. But when it comes to realizing those creative overflowing ideas, it might seem too perfect to be true. And it's one way of looking at this from an analytical perspective.

Creative designers all throughout the internet share their content on websites such as Dribbble, Pinterest, Adobe's renowned Behance... It just tells you how incredible the diversity which is prevalent on the internet and all around the world.

When it comes to User Interface & User Experience design, be it physical or digital, that represents another story. People tend to go for the aesthetic level and they do actually come up with interesting ideas and incredible amount of creativity and thought are put into it.

Plenty of examples in the website below:

Some look identical, some may look very different and more creative than others, and that's the gist of things when it comes to designs.

So what is Accessibility?

The first thing that comes to mind is this:

The Handicap Sign

In short and within the internet spectrum, accessibility is the way websites or applications are designed in order to target as many people as possible.

But the question is, is it taken into consideration when making designs for websites and applications?

This matter should be taken more seriously, as many websites do not support proper accessibility for people affected with certain disabilities for example:

  • Cognitive as an example: Dyslexia

  • Neurological or Physical (Voice recognition)

  • Auditory (Using captions in videos)

  • Visual (Adjust contrast accordingly)

  • Speech (Voice recognition)

Here's a video representing the perspectives of web accessibility for further details:

So whenever a new idea is put forward as a future projet, it should take into consideration this aspect of accessibility and take it more seriously, especially since now we are going through a difficult period due to the pandemic... and only one way to share with the world; The Internet.
